
Mr Anthony Chan
Violin Teacher
Australian violinist Anthony Chan is a major prize-winner of the Junior Wenkart Foundation Competition, as well as the Ku-ring-gai Philharmonic Orchestra Concerto Competition and Sydney Eisteddfod. As an active solo, chamber and orchestral musician, he has performed across the United States, the Netherlands, Germany, France, China, and Australia, at major venues including the Het Concertgebouw, the National Performing Centre of the Arts in Beijing, Carnegie Hall in New York, Jordan Hall in Boston, Hamer Hall in Melbourne and the Sydney Opera House.
Mr. Chan has worked with numerous renowned violinists including Stefan Jackiw, Andrew Haveron, Sophie Rowell, Michelle Walsh, Kristopher Tong, and John Harding, while his orchestral experience has given him the opportunity to perform with eminent conductors such as Sir Mark Elder, Krzyzstof UrbanĚski, Hugh Wolff, James Judd and Leonard Slatkin. In the fall of 2019, he was appointed principal assistant concertmaster of the Boston Philharmonic Youth Orchestra and was awarded a position in the violin section of the Boston Philharmonic under Benjamin Zander. Mr. Chan also spends his time as a permanent member of the Canberra Symphony Orchestra, Australian Youth Orchestra and NEC Philharmonia and has been concertmaster of the Australian Combined Schools Music Festival Orchestra, Manhattan School of Music Philharmonia and Sydney Grammar School Orchestras.
Mr. Chan began his violin studies when he was six years old, studying primarily with Associate Professor Alice Waten at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music Rising Stars Program while also on a full music scholarship at Sydney Grammar School. He initially commenced his tertiary music studies at Manhattan School of Music, where his main teachers were Sheryl Staples and Todd Phillips, before transferring to New England Conservatory in Boston for his junior year where he is currently studying with both Ayano Ninomiya and Nicholas Kitchen. Concurrently, since his time in New York, Anthony has been mentored by Kenneth Renshaw. In the Summer of 2020, Mr. Chan attended the Vivace Music Festival where he undertook studies with Catherine Cho, Ida Kavafian, Xiao-Dong Wang and Hye-Jin Kim. For the Summer of 2021, Mr. Chan will be participating in the Keshet Eilon String Summer Mastercourse Series as well as continuing his association with the Vivace Music Festival.
After graduating, he hopes to pursue his love for chamber music and start up a chamber music organisation in Australia, similar to that of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center.
